So now that I have my separator and my impellor and motor all figured out the next point of complication was ducting everything. This led me back to the internet; the internet is a scary place for dust collection ducting. In this case there is too much information on the subject, metal ducting, PVC ducting, flex ducting, what gauge of metal, what type of PVC, is static electricity going to blow my entire shop away.
I settled on sewer and drain PVC pipe (Home Depot #1610 10’ sections) and fittings and started to map out my system. Being as how everything is on wheels and stays against a wall a lot of times this presented another problem, how do you hard duct mobile tools?? And how do you keep all of your ducting out of the way when you want to bring a vehicle in. The only place to go was up. So my dust collection system is broken into 3 main legs: the table saw/planer leg, the bandsaw/drill press/ scroll saw leg and the miter saw leg. I also made a break in my ducting to add a future sanding leg.
Here the dust collector is mounted in its box raised off the floor on a platform. Being in a single car garage square footage is at a premium so the best solution was to go up. I wanted to keep the amount of flex duct as minimal as possible but I needed to have some extra to be able to remove the Thein top hat to empty my Brute trash can. So the first main line goes up the wall to a PVC WYE to split to the right for the table saw and miter saw and to the left for the bandsaw/drill press and scroll saw.
Going to the right there is the 4” PVC Wye (Home Depot #4P08) connect to a short piece of 4” sewer and drain ducting which goes through a 4” blast gate (Woodcraft #85006). In order to make the blast gate fit snug inside the 4” sewer and drain PVC pipe I wrapped electrical tape around the blast gate connection (8 wraps made for a snug fit). From there it goes through a 45 degree 4” sewer and drain PVC fitting (Home Depot #4P03) and then to another 4” Wye. The Wye branches off on one side to go to the table saw/planer cart and on the other to go to the miter saw.
Next will be connections
